On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, a dramatic accident shook the small town of Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp, in the Doubs region of France. A 70-year-old man, driving under the influence of alcohol, lost control of his vehicle and struck a group of children and adults on their way to the school canteen. A 5-year-old girl was seriously injured, leaving the community in deep shock.
An ordinary walk turned into a tragedy
Around noon, a group of 21 children, aged 3 to 6, accompanied by their supervisors, was walking through the village to reach the school cafeteria. This routine journey took a tragic turn when a car veered off the road and onto the sidewalk, hitting several members of the group.
A drunk driver identified as the culprit
Investigations conducted by the Valdahon gendarmes and the Pontarlier motorized brigade revealed that the driver, a 70-year-old man with no prior criminal record, had been drinking before taking the wheel. His loss of control caused this tragedy, which could have had even graver consequences.
This heartbreaking incident highlights, once again, the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, endangering pedestrians, especially children, who are among the most vulnerable road users.
