At the X Factor boot camp, Sam Black, a hopeful contestant, surprised everyone by proposing to his girlfriend, Emma, during his audition.

Despite his heartfelt performance of Del Shannon’s “Runaway,” the judges—Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger, Sharon Osbourne, and Louis Walsh—decided not to advance him to the next round, and his audition came to an emotional end.

Simon interrupted Sam’s song, asking him to sing without the music so the panel could hear his voice more clearly. After a brief consultation, Simon delivered the crushing news that Sam would not be moving forward.

“We all really like you,” Simon said honestly. “But we’ll have to say no. I think people will really like you though.”

Sam, disappointed but determined, asked, “Is there anything I can do before I go? I’m never going to get this chance.” He then called Emma onto the stage and knelt down to propose. “Do you think I can get a yes from you?” he asked.

With tears in her eyes, Emma said yes, leaving the audience in awe. Nicole Scherzinger was visibly moved by the moment, and Simon couldn’t help but comment, “You’ve got a good one there.” He added, “That’s probably better than us saying yes.”
