A young woman came to the palace to take part in the selection of brides for the king, but she refused to show her face and kept it hidden beneath a thick veil the entire time. However, when she finally removed the veil on their first wedding night, the king froze in shock when he saw what had been hidden underneath it all along 😨
King Adrian was thirty-five years old, but he still had not married.
After his father’s death, the advisers reminded him almost every day that the kingdom needed an heir. Daughters from the richest and most influential families came to the palace, but none of them interested the king.
Some tried too hard to please him, others talked only about wealth and status, while others agreed with every word he said.
Then Adrian announced a grand selection.
Girls from all over the kingdom were invited to the palace, and for several days the king personally spoke with each of them.
But on the final day, a young woman entered the hall and immediately attracted everyone’s attention.
She wore an expensive light-colored dress embroidered with golden threads, and her head was covered by a large hood. The lower part of her face was completely hidden behind a thin veil, so only her gray eyes could be seen.
“Remove your veil,” one of the advisers ordered.
The young woman looked at him calmly.
“I will remove it only in front of my husband.”
Laughter spread through the hall.
“And what if the king does not want to marry a woman whose face he has never seen?” one of the candidates mocked.
“Then I will leave,” the stranger replied. “I did not come here to sell my face.”
For the first time in several days, Adrian smiled. He ordered everyone to be silent and began asking the young woman questions.
Her name was Eleonora.
She did not talk about her family’s wealth, did not praise herself, and never once tried to please the king. When Adrian asked what she expected from her husband, the young woman replied:
“That he does not demand from me what he himself is not willing to give.”
“For example?”
“Trust.”
After those words, the king became thoughtful.
The next day, he summoned Eleonora again. Then once more.
They talked about wars, laws, poor villages, and why people are sometimes afraid of their own rulers.
Eleonora argued with him whenever she believed he was wrong, and once she even said:
“Your Majesty, if everyone around you tells you only what you want to hear, it means there are too many cowards around you.”
The advisers turned pale. But Adrian laughed.
A week later, he announced his decision.
“Eleonora will become my wife.”
The hall erupted in noise.
“But you do not even know what she looks like!” protested the mother of one of the girls.
The king looked coldly at the woman.
“I want to uncover her secret.”
The wedding took place a month later.
Even during the ceremony, Eleonora did not remove her veil. Many considered it an insult, but the king did not allow anyone to force her to do it.
Only late at night, when the doors of the royal chambers closed and they were alone, did Adrian approach his wife.
For a while, he silently looked into her eyes, then smiled.
“You are finally my wife. Now show me your face.”
Eleonora froze. For the first time, the king noticed fear in her eyes.
“What is wrong?”
“Do you promise to listen to me first?”
Adrian frowned.
“I promise.”
The young woman slowly raised her hands and removed the veil.
The smile disappeared from the king’s face. He took a step back in shock, because beneath the veil was… 😳😨 The continuation of the story can be found in the first comment 👇👇
A large old scar ran down the right side of Eleonora’s face, beginning near her temple and extending almost to her chin. But it was not the scar itself that shocked the king.
He had seen it before.
“That cannot be…” Adrian said quietly.
Five years earlier, during a rebellion, an unknown girl had led the young prince through a secret passage out of the burning palace. She had suffered a severe burn while saving him and then disappeared.
Adrian had spent years trying to find her.
“Was it you?”
Eleonora nodded.
“I did not want you to choose me out of gratitude.”
The king remained silent for a long time.
“Is that why you hid your face?”
“Yes.”
But Eleonora had not finished yet.
She walked over to the table, took a small medallion from inside her dress, and placed it in front of her husband.
Adrian immediately recognized the coat of arms of the man who had organized the rebellion five years earlier.
“Where did you get this?”
“Because that man was my father.”
The king suddenly looked up.
Eleonora explained that her father had indeed been preparing a conspiracy, but at the last moment she discovered his plans and decided to save the prince. After that
