My huge dog had been constantly climbing onto the highest kitchen cabinets and barking wildly at the ceiling for the past few days; at first, I tried to make him come down using my cane, until one day I understood why he was really climbing up there đŸ˜±

I have lived alone for many years. After injuring my leg, it is hard for me to stand for a long time without support, and climbing a step ladder is completely out of the question. I move around the house with a cane.

My only constant companion is my dog, Bruno.

Bruno is a huge, heavy dog, but at the same time he is surprisingly calm. Over all these years, he has never damaged furniture, never climbed onto tables, and knew perfectly well where he was not allowed to go.

That is why his new behavior seemed completely insane to me.

It all started a few days ago. Early one morning, I heard a loud crash in the kitchen. When I went in, I literally froze in place.

Somehow, Bruno had managed to climb onto the very top of the kitchen cabinets, almost right under the ceiling.

— What are you doing up there?! — I shouted.

But the dog did not even look at me. He stood with his paws spread wide apart, staring at a corner of the ceiling and barking loudly and furiously.

I called for him to come down. No reaction. Then I carefully raised my cane and tried to gently nudge him so he would climb down.

— Bruno, down! Right now!

But something strange happened. The usually obedient dog suddenly growled at me. Not angrily, more like a warning. Then he turned back toward the ceiling and began barking even louder.

A few minutes later, he finally jumped down. I thought that was the end of it. But the next day, the same thing happened again. And then once more.

Bruno behaved especially strangely early in the morning. He would run into the kitchen, sniff the air anxiously, put his front paws on the countertop, and then somehow, unbelievably, end up on top of the cabinets again.

Every time, in the exact same place.

I started to get irritated. I could not check that spot myself. And I did not want to call someone over something so stupid.

“It must be a mouse,” I kept telling myself.

But on the morning of the fourth day, something even stranger happened. And that was when I finally understood the reason for my dog’s unusual behavior đŸ«ŁđŸ˜± The continuation of the story can be found in the first comment 👇👇

I woke up to frantic barking. When I entered the kitchen, Bruno was up there again. But this time, he was not just barking. The dog was scratching the wall with his paw. I raised my cane.

— That’s enough! Get down from there!

And then Bruno suddenly fell silent. In the complete silence, I heard a sound. Quiet. Barely noticeable. As if someone were scratching the wall from inside. I froze.

A few seconds later, I heard it again: rustling
 scratching
 and then a faint meow.

It definitely was not a mouse. I immediately called my neighbor and asked him to come over urgently.

He brought a step ladder, climbed up to the spot Bruno had been looking at for days, and moved aside the decorative panel above the cabinets.

— There’s some kind of empty space here, — my neighbor muttered.

Then he suddenly fell silent.

— What is it? — I asked.

He shone his phone inside and suddenly said:

— My God
 There’s someone in here.

When he reached his hand into the narrow space, a pitiful meow came from inside. A few minutes later, my neighbor carefully pulled a tiny kitten out from behind the panel. But then he found a second one. And then a third.

It turned out that there was a small service cavity behind the kitchen cabinets. A few weeks earlier, workers had repaired the outside wall of the house and left an opening near the ventilation system. A stray cat had somehow gotten inside and made a shelter there for her kittens.

Later, the opening outside had been closed. The mother could no longer return. The kittens had become trapped inside a narrow cavity between the wall and the ceiling.

I simply could not hear their faint meows. But Bruno could. All those days, he had not been climbing up there because he had gone crazy. He was trying to get as close to the kittens as possible and, with his barking, make me pay attention to that exact spot.
