I noticed this strange object at a friend’s place that looked like scissors – when I found out what it actually was, I was surprised

Recently, I noticed this strange object at my friend’s place, who is an artist 🤔 At first glance, it looked like scissors, but the shape was very unusual: curved handles and instead of sharp blades — some blunt, elongated part!

I spent a long time wondering what it could be 🤔 When my friend explained what it was, I was shocked 😲 It turned out to be…

Not long ago, I visited my old friend’s workshop — an artist and a collector of all things unusual. He has always amazed me with his finds, but this time, I came across something that completely baffled me.

On one of his tables, among brushes, oil paints, and some vintage frames, lay a strange metal object. At first glance, it looked like scissors — with rings for fingers and something resembling blades.

But the shape was totally bizarre: curved, intricate handles, a solid body, and instead of sharp blades — some blunt, elongated part. One side was clearly longer than the other. I picked it up and asked, confused:

— What is this? Scissors for dwarfs?

My friend smiled and, without looking away from the canvas, answered:

— These are old scissors for trimming candle wicks.

I didn’t believe it at first. It turned out that back in the day, when candles were the main source of light, people used such scissors to shorten the burning wick.

This helped the candle burn evenly without smoking. At the top, there was a special “trap” where the cut piece fell, so it wouldn’t drop onto the table or floor.

Today, such scissors are rare. They are no longer made, and you can only find them at flea markets or in old collections.

Since then, this strange object has become a symbol for me — a reminder of how even in the everyday items of the past, unexpected beauty and elegance can be hidden.
