That day, Maxim, the CEO of a large construction company, arrived at the office earlier than usual. In forty minutes, he was supposed to have the most important meeting he had had in years.

Maxim stepped into the elevator and immediately looked at his watch.

But the dispatcher simply apologized and asked them to wait.

Maxim nervously looked at his watch and turned toward the cleaning woman.

“Great. Just great. Why did you even get in here with that cart? You probably hit something.”

“I didn’t touch anything.”

“Of course. You people always have the same answer. Nobody is ever responsible for anything.”

“Because of some brainless worker, I’m about to lose a multimillion-dollar contract. How pathetic you are.”

“How do you even know where I’m going and who I’m meeting?”

At first, the woman didn’t want to answer, but then she began to explain.

It turned out that she often cleaned the conference room in the evenings after meetings. The previous day, Maxim had left early, while the investors’ representatives stayed behind in the room waiting for their car.

They were speaking to each other in a foreign language and were certain that the cleaning woman couldn’t understand a word. But they were wrong.

Before the woman’s life changed dramatically and she was forced to take a job as a cleaner, she had lived abroad for several years and spoke that language fluently.

“They were talking about you,” she said. “I heard the name of your company and your name, so I started listening more carefully.”

Maxim was no longer smiling.

“And what exactly did they say?”

“They’re planning to change several pages of the contract before you sign it. You’ll receive the money now, but afterward, all the additional expenses and debts will be transferred to your company. They said you’re in a hurry and won’t bother reading the entire document again anyway.”

Maxim’s expression changed. That very morning, the investors had indeed told him that they had prepared a “slightly updated version” of the contract.

He hadn’t thought much of it.

“Why didn’t you tell me anything yesterday?”

“I tried. This morning, I came to your office, but you walked right past me and told your secretary, ‘Get the cleaner out of here. I don’t have time.’”

When the elevator started working again, he immediately called his lawyer and ordered him to check every single line of the new contract. Twenty minutes later, he received an answer.
