Archaeologists found a mummy more than 3,200 years old inside a sealed stone tomb, but during a CT scan, a scientist noticed a strange detail inside the body. The mummy was discovered during excavations of an ancient burial site in the middle of the desert.
The archaeologists had been working there for several months and were almost ready to end the expedition when they found a narrow passage beneath one of the collapsed walls, completely buried under sand and stones.
Behind it was a small tomb.
What was strange was that apparently no one had entered it for thousands of years. The stone door was still sealed, the jewelry remained in its original places, and a massive sarcophagus stood in the center of the chamber.
But something else surprised the researchers even more.
The same drawing appeared several times on the inside of the door: a human figure surrounded by other people lying on the ground.
The scientists assumed it was simply a common depiction of death or the afterlife, so they did not pay much attention to it.
The sarcophagus was opened. Inside was the mummy of a man around forty years old.
The body was so well preserved that even through the darkened skin, his facial features and fingers could still be distinguished. The man had been wrapped in several layers of cloth, and a small wooden amulet lay beside his head.
The mummy was carefully transported to the laboratory. The researchers wanted to find out what this man had eaten, what injuries he had suffered during his lifetime, and most importantly, what had caused his death.
No one intended to unwrap the body. It was placed inside a special scanner that allowed them to look inside without damaging the remains.
For the first few minutes, everything went completely normally.
The bones, spine, ribs, and remains of the internal organs gradually appeared on the screen.

The scientist calmly went through the images one by one until she reached the chest. Then she stopped.
There were strange dark areas in the lungs. At first, the woman assumed they were simply normal changes that had occurred in the body over thousands of years.
She enlarged the image. Then she opened the next scan. The same marks were visible there.
Moreover, they were distributed far too evenly, as though the disease had affected both lungs while the man was still alive.
The scientist frowned and called a colleague over.
— Look at this.
The man approached the monitor. For several seconds, they silently studied the images.
— Maybe he was simply sick before he died? — the colleague suggested.
But the woman was already opening data from another part of the body.
She saw enlarged lymph nodes, followed by several other changes that did not fit well with an ordinary lung infection.
Something made her uneasy. The scientist quickly walked over to the table where the photographs from the tomb were lying and found the picture of that same wall.
A human figure. And around it lay dozens of people. Now the drawing looked completely different. Perhaps it was not a depiction of the afterlife at all. Perhaps the ancient people had been trying to warn others.
The woman returned to the computer and began comparing what she had seen with descriptions of ancient diseases.
A few minutes later, her expression changed. According to one theory, the man might have died from an extremely contagious infection capable of spreading rapidly from person to person and severely damaging the lungs.
But that was not the most frightening part.
The mummy had been found inside a completely sealed tomb.
If traces of an ancient pathogen had truly survived inside, no one could immediately say whether it might still pose a danger after thousands of years.
And the sarcophagus had been opened only a few hours earlier. Without protective suits. Without isolating the room. Six people had already been inside the laboratory. The scientist slowly looked at the mummy.
At that moment, the scan finished, and the monitor suddenly emitted several loud signals. The woman flinched. She looked once more at the image of the lungs, then at her own gloves.
And suddenly she remembered that a few minutes earlier, while adjusting the cloth near the mummy’s head, a small cloud of ancient dust had risen into the air.
