A few hours after our wedding, my husband threw a dirty kitchen rag straight into my face in front of his entire family and calmly ordered me to get down on my knees and clean up what his mother had just spilled. He was sure that after the wedding I was not going anywhere and would quickly get used to the new “house rules,” but he could not even imagine what I would do just a few minutes later 😨
The morning after the wedding was supposed to be peaceful. At least, that was how I had imagined it.
The night before, Mark and I had been accepting congratulations until almost midnight, taking photos, dancing, and listening to endless toasts from relatives. The next day, his family decided to organize a large late breakfast at my mother-in-law’s house.
More than twenty people were sitting around the long table. The guests were discussing the wedding photos, some were laughing about the games from the day before, while my mother-in-law kept walking back and forth between the kitchen and the dining room, constantly watching me.
Even before the wedding, she had said a few strange things.
— In our family, women know their place.
At the time, I took it as a bad joke.
Mark always laughed and said his mother was simply old-fashioned. I believed him.
As I walked past the table, my mother-in-law suddenly knocked a large bowl of greasy meat sauce with her elbow. Part of it spilled directly onto the floor and splashed the hem of my light-colored dress.
— Well, there you go, she said, not even trying to hide her smile. — Look at the mess you made.
I looked at her in surprise.
— But you were the one who knocked the bowl.
The room immediately became noticeably quieter. My mother-in-law slowly turned toward her son.
Mark put down his fork, stood up from the table, and walked over to the kitchen counter. I thought he was going to get some napkins.
Instead, my husband picked up an old kitchen rag covered in dark stains from oil and food.
He walked over to me and suddenly threw it straight into my face. The fabric hit my cheek and fell onto my shoulder.
Several relatives looked away, but no one said anything.
Mark looked at me completely calmly.
— Pick it up.
I slowly removed the rag from my shoulder.
— What?
— You heard me. Get down on your knees and wipe the floor.
Someone at the table gave a nervous laugh.
Mark took another step toward me.
— You’d better get used to it right away. Now you’re a wife, not a guest. No one here is going to clean up after you.
My mother-in-law stood by the table, watching the scene with satisfaction.
That was the exact moment I finally realized that all of this had been planned in advance. They were probably expecting me to cry, start arguing, or try to defend myself.
But none of them could even imagine what I was about to do or what a harsh lesson I would teach them 😨😳 The continuation of the story can be found in the first comment 👇👇
I simply looked at Mark.
The man standing in front of me was nothing like the one I had been dating for almost two years. Just the day before, he had held my hand in front of the guests, said he would protect me, and called me the most precious person in his life.
Now he was clearly enjoying the fact that twenty-two relatives were watching him publicly put his new wife “in her place.”
I suddenly smiled. Mark frowned.
— What’s so funny?
— Nothing. I’m just going upstairs first to change my dress. It’s completely stained.
My mother-in-law immediately nodded.
— Go ahead. Then you’ll come back and clean everything up.
Mark even stepped aside to let me pass. That was probably why they did not suspect anything. I calmly went up to the second floor, entered the bedroom, and closed the door.
The boxes and envelopes we had received as wedding gifts were still lying on the bed. We had not even had time to open some of them.
I took a travel bag out of the closet. First, I put in my passport, bank cards, and documents.
Then I gathered all the wedding gifts that had been given to us: the envelopes from my relatives, the jewelry, the box of money from my parents, and several expensive items.
Ten minutes later, the bag was almost full.
From downstairs, I heard Mark’s voice:
— Did you fall asleep up there?
I opened the bedroom window.
Below it was the small roof of an extension, and nearby there was an outdoor staircase that workers had used during the renovation of the house.
Getting down turned out to be much easier than I expected. A few minutes later, I was already walking down the next street while calling a taxi.
My phone started ringing almost immediately. First Mark. Then my mother-in-law. Then Mark again. I did not answer a single time.
That same day, I went to a friend’s house, and the next morning I contacted a lawyer and filed for divorce.
Later, Mark sent me a long message.
He claimed it had only been a family joke and that I had overreacted.
But after that morning, no one could convince me anymore that throwing a dirty rag into your wife’s face and forcing her to get down on her knees was a joke.
