A man pulled a small wolf pup out of an icy river after it nearly drowned. But when he pressed the trembling animal against his chest and tried to make his way back to the shore, adult wolves began emerging from the forest one after another. That day, the man had gone to a mountain lake with a small group of tourists.
After the rain during the night, the water level had risen, the current in the narrow part of the river had become much stronger than usual, and the surrounding forest seemed almost deserted.
The man knew the area well and had warned the tourists many times that wolves lived there. Usually, the animals avoided people and almost never came close.
That was why, at first, no one paid attention to the strange sound coming from the direction of the water.
It was quiet and intermittent. As if someone were whimpering and then suddenly falling silent.
The man stopped and looked toward the river. Something was moving between the rocks.
At first, he thought the current was carrying a branch or a piece of wood. But a few seconds later, a small wet head appeared above the surface of the water.
It was a wolf pup. The little animal was desperately trying to stay above the surface, but the strong current kept dragging it toward the middle of the river. Its paws were barely moving anymore.
The tourists froze on the shore. But one man immediately rushed toward the river.
Someone pulled out a phone, while someone else began shouting at the man not to go into the water. The river was freezing cold, and the bottom dropped sharply in that area.
But the man could see that in just a few more seconds, the animal would simply drown.
He quickly took off his jacket and stepped into the river. At first, the water reached his knees, then his waist. But the current was much stronger than he had expected.
Several times, the man nearly lost his balance, but he kept moving forward.
The wolf pup was barely visible anymore. At the last moment, the man reached out and grabbed the little animal by its fur.
He lifted it above the water and pressed it against his chest. The pup was cold and barely moving. The man gently ran his hand along its back.
A few seconds later, the little animal coughed weakly, opened its eyes, and tried to lift its head. Someone on the shore shouted in relief.
The man was already about to head back when he suddenly noticed movement between the trees.
First, he saw one wolf. A large gray animal stood near the water and stared directly at him. Then a second one appeared on the left. Another on the right.
The man froze. More wolves began coming out of the forest. One after another. Within seconds, there were already at least eight of them. Some stood on the shore, while several stepped directly into the water.
The tourists stopped talking. Even those who had been filming everything on their phones lowered their hands. The man slowly looked around and realized there was almost no way back.
The wolf pup was still in his arms.
That was when the man understood what had happened. This was the pup’s pack. And among the wolves was almost certainly its mother.
The man was afraid to even take a step. He knew that an adult wolf could attack within seconds, especially if it believed its young was in danger.
One of the largest wolves slowly stepped into the water. Two more followed behind it. The distance between them was quickly shrinking.
The man held the pup even tighter and said quietly:
— I’m not going to hurt him.
Of course, the animals could not understand his words, but hearing his own voice helped him stay calm.
The large wolf came almost right up to him. The man could see its wet fur, its heavy breathing, and its eyes fixed on the pup.
At that moment, the man was already certain that this would end badly.
But suddenly, the little wolf pup moved.
It lifted its head and made a short, plaintive sound.
Then a large she-wolf stepped out from the pack. She slowly came closer. The man remained completely still.
The she-wolf looked first at him, then at the pup.

The she-wolf did not attack him. She gently touched the man’s hand with her nose. Then she moved closer to the pup and licked its wet muzzle several times. The little animal immediately became more alert and began reaching toward her.
The man bent down very slowly and placed the wolf pup in the shallow water. The she-wolf immediately stood beside it.
Several other wolves came even closer. The man prepared for the worst, but instead of attacking, one of the animals calmly walked past him.
Another stopped nearby and simply looked at the man for several seconds. Then the pack began moving back toward the forest.
The she-wolf turned around several times, as if checking whether the pup was following her. The little wolf took a few uncertain steps, then ran after her.
The man was still standing in the water and could not believe that he had remained unharmed.
Before disappearing among the trees, the she-wolf suddenly stopped. She looked directly at the man. For several seconds, they simply stared at each other.
Then the she-wolf turned around and disappeared into the forest with the rest of the pack. Only after that did the man slowly walk out of the water.
On the shore, the tourists surrounded him and began talking all at once. But he barely listened to them. The man was still staring toward the forest.
