For decades, no woman could become Queen of Elvaria if the royal eagle rejected her. But when the ugliest woman in the kingdom approached the bird, something happened that left everyone in the palace frozen in shock 😳
For twenty-five years, a strange tradition had existed in the Kingdom of Elvaria.
The queen was not chosen by advisers, wealthy families, or even by the king himself.
She was chosen by the royal eagle.
This tradition began after a terrible year when three queens died unexpectedly, one after another. Each came from an influential family, each promised to make the country stronger, but none of them managed to rule for long.
People began saying that the throne was cursed.
Then an old adviser proposed an unusual solution.
For many generations, a huge royal eagle had lived in the palace. According to legend, its ancestors had once been given as a gift to the first king of Elvaria. The adviser declared that the next ruler should be chosen by the bird itself.
At first, everyone laughed.
But the first woman in front of whom the eagle calmly lowered its head and allowed her to touch its feathers was the young Eleonora.
She ruled for almost twenty years.
During that time, new roads were built in Elvaria, taxes for poor families were reduced, schools were opened, and several cities were rebuilt after the war.
After that, no one laughed at the old bird anymore.
When the queen died, a new selection began.
But there was a problem. The eagle rejected everyone.
As soon as another noblewoman approached, the bird would start beating its wings violently, screeching, and striking the wooden perch with its claws.
One duchess even received a deep scratch on her arm.
Almost three years passed, but Elvaria still had no new ruler.
Women from all over the kingdom arrived for the next trial.
The main candidate was Lady Celeste, daughter of the most influential count.
She entered the hall wearing an expensive white dress embroidered with gold and precious stones.
“If the eagle really can choose, it will definitely choose me,” she quietly told her father.
Celeste was educated, beautiful, and came from a family that owned almost one-third of the land in the north of the country.
When she approached the bird, the entire hall fell silent. Celeste reached out her hand. The eagle stared at her for several seconds, then suddenly spread its enormous wings and snapped its beak right beside her fingers.
The girl screamed and stepped back. A whisper spread through the hall.
At that very moment, there was another woman standing among the guests. Her name was Mara.
In the kingdom, she was known for a completely different reason.
Mara had been born with harsh facial features, and after a serious illness in childhood, her skin had become covered with severe marks and inflammation. She was heavyset, wore old clothes, and her hair was almost always tangled.
People called her the ugliest woman in Elvaria.
Some fairground owners even offered her money to appear before crowds alongside circus performers. Mara agreed because she had almost no other way to earn a living.
She had also been brought to the palace purely to entertain the guests. All evening, wealthy people laughed at her, asked her to tell funny stories, and deliberately made her walk around the hall so they could whisper behind her back.
When the trial was over, a young nobleman suddenly shouted:
“Let her try too! It can’t get any worse anyway!”
The hall burst into laughter. Mara turned pale.
She did not want to approach the eagle, but several people began pushing her forward. The young woman slowly walked toward the enormous bird. But in the next second, something happened that left everyone in the hall completely frozen in shock 😱😰 The continuation of the story can be found in the first comment 👇👇
The eagle raised its head. Everyone expected it to start screeching again or strike with its claws.
But instead, the bird suddenly lowered its wings. Mara carefully raised her hand. The eagle tilted its head and calmly pressed itself against her palm.
The hall became so quiet that the crackling of the candles could be heard. Then the bird did something it had never done even before the previous queen. It jumped down from its perch, walked up to Mara, and bowed its head directly in front of her.
The old royal keeper turned pale.
“Eagles of this bloodline greet only those with royal blood this way.”
Everyone looked at Mara. The king, who until then had been silently watching, suddenly noticed a small silver pendant around her neck.
He slowly stepped closer.
That pendant had belonged to his first wife.
Many years earlier, she had given birth to a baby girl. The king, who had desperately wanted a son, became furious and ordered his servants to get rid of the child.
He was told that the order had been carried out.
But the servants had not been able to kill the baby.
They secretly gave the girl to a poor family far from the capital. That was how Mara grew up without ever knowing who she really was.
The king stared at her for several seconds and then, for the first time in many years, lowered his eyes in shame.
And the woman whom the entire palace had been laughing at only a few minutes earlier now stood beside the royal eagle.
And now no one was laughing anymore.
