For twenty years, the queen followed one rule: whoever managed to hit the tiny center of the royal target three times would earn the right to make one wish — anything the crown could legally grant. No one had ever succeeded, but when a huge young woman stepped into the center of the field, something happened that left everyone completely shocked 😳
For twenty years, the queen followed one strange rule: whoever managed to hit the tiny center of the royal target three times in a row would earn the right to make one wish — anything the crown could legally grant.
When this custom first appeared, people saw it as a beautiful royal tradition. But very soon, the challenge became almost legendary.
The best archers from different parts of the kingdom came to the square. Among them were hunters capable of shooting a bird from a great distance, soldiers who had been using bows for decades, and even champions of royal tournaments. Some hit the center once, the luckiest ones twice, but the third shot always went wide.
Some whispered that the servants deliberately changed the distance to the target or secretly stretched a special fabric that caused the arrows to veer off course. Others insisted that it was simply the pressure: after two perfect hits, a person began to realize how close they were to making their dream come true, and their hands inevitably started to shake.
Whatever the reason, more and more people wanted to try.
The reason was simple. You could ask for almost anything: gold, land, a house, freedom from debt, or a position at court. That was why, on the day of the next challenge, the huge arena was once again packed.
When the herald announced the next participant, a very large young woman slowly walked out through the gates with a heavy bow in her hands. Her name was Rose.
For several seconds, the spectators simply stared at her, and then laughter began to rise from the stands.
— Did she really come here to shoot, or to cover the target with her body? — someone shouted.
— Look at her fingers! How is she even going to hold such a thin bowstring?
— She’ll be tired before she even reaches the shooting line!
The laughter grew louder and louder.
Rose really was much larger than most of the people around her. She wore a simple brown dress, her hair was tied up carelessly, and worn leather straps could be seen on her hands.
Even the queen, sitting on a golden throne, smiled.
— The best archers in my army failed this challenge, — she said to her adviser loudly enough for the nearby courtiers to hear. — I wonder why this girl decided to make a fool of herself.
Rose heard everything but did not say a word. She calmly stood on the marked spot, checked the bowstring, and looked at the distant target.
The arena gradually became quiet. Rose raised the bow. And then she did something that left everyone in the arena frozen in complete shock 😳😱 The rest of the story can be found in the first comment 👇👇
The first arrow whistled through the air and struck the tiny center perfectly. Surprised cries came from the stands. Some thought she had simply been lucky.
Rose took the second arrow, pulled the bowstring back, and fired almost without pausing. The arrow landed beside the first one. Right in the center. The smile disappeared from the queen’s face.
Now the arena was so silent that the wind could be heard moving the banners above the fortress walls.
Rose slowly took out the third arrow. This time, even those who had mocked her moments earlier remained silent.
She drew the bowstring, held her breath, and released.
The third arrow struck exactly between the previous two.
For several seconds, no one moved, and then the entire arena erupted in shouts.
The queen rose from her throne.
— In twenty years, no one has ever done this, — she said. — You have earned your wish. Tell me what you want. Gold? Land? A house? A royal title?
Rose lowered the bow.
— I don’t need any of that.
She slowly walked closer to the throne.
— I want you to reopen my husband’s case.
Surprise appeared on the queen’s face.
It turned out that five years earlier, Rose’s husband had been accused of murdering a royal tax collector. Several witnesses had testified against him, and the man had been sent to prison, even though he had insisted until the very end that he was innocent.
Rose had tried to get a new investigation, written petitions, visited officials, and even sold her belongings to pay lawyers, but no one wanted to reopen a case that had long been considered closed.
Then she remembered the royal challenge.
For five years, Rose trained every day.
At first, her arrows barely hit the target. Then she learned to hit the circle, and later the center. She trained in the rain, in the cold, and even when her fingers bled from the bowstring.
She had not come to the arena for glory.
A few weeks later, the case was indeed reopened.
It turned out that one of the main witnesses had been paid to give false testimony, and that the real criminal had been living all that time in a neighboring town under a different name.
Rose’s husband was released.
