In 2016, a heart-wrenching photo spread on social media: a white woman giving water from a bottle to an emaciated dark-skinned baby right in the middle of the street.
The image went viral and sparked a wave of sympathy and questions: Who is this woman, who is this child, and what happened to them afterward?
The woman turned out to be Danish volunteer Anja Ringgren Lovén, who was working in Nigeria at the time.
Together with a partner organization, she rescued children whom locals believed to be “possessed by evil spirits” and cast out of their families. Often, these children were simply left to die from hunger.
The same boy in the photo, barely able to stand, was found by Anja at the roadside. She immediately gave him water from her bottle and wrapped him in a blanket.
Thanks to quick help, the child, later named Hope, was taken to the hospital.
After treatment, Anja took him to a charity center that she helped establish. The center became a home for many children rejected by society.
Over the years, Anja has saved up to 30 children who faced similar accusations. But it was Hope’s story that became the symbol of her mission.
Today, Hope is a healthy, smiling boy. He loves music, drawing, and happily attends a Nigerian boarding school.
Anja and her civil partner, Nigerian David Emmanuel Umem, have become true parents to him. They also have a biological son together, David Junior, who recently turned 10 years old.
Anja regularly visits Hope, helping with his studies and health.
