Recently, our dog kept barking at the babysitter and would not let her get near the child. At first, we thought he simply was not used to a stranger, so we locked him in another room until one day we understood the real reason for his behavior 😱
After our son was born, our lives changed completely. During the first few weeks, my wife barely left the baby’s side, but she could not stay home for long. An important project was waiting for her at work, and after only a few weeks, she had to return to the office.
I also worked full-time, so we urgently needed a babysitter.
After several interviews, we chose a woman named Margaret. She was around forty years old, had worked with children for many years, spoke calmly, and seemed like someone you could truly trust with a child.
During the first few days, my wife even said several times:
— It seems like we got very lucky.
Margaret always arrived on time, asked how the baby had slept at night, neatly folded the baby’s clothes, and gave us a detailed report every evening about how many times he had eaten and when he had fallen asleep.
There was only one problem. Our dog Rex could not stand her.
On the very first day, when Margaret approached the crib, Rex stood between her and the child. He did not attack her, but he watched the woman closely and growled quietly.
We had never seen him like that before.
Rex had lived with us for several years. He was a big, strong dog, but completely calm. He behaved normally around guests, let our friends’ children pet him, and never showed aggression without a reason.
That was why his reaction to Margaret seemed especially strange.
— He is probably just jealous of the baby, — my wife decided.
We also tried to find a logical explanation. A baby, new smells, crying at night, and now a stranger had all appeared in the house at once.
But several days passed, and things only got worse.
As soon as Margaret came near the crib, Rex was immediately there. Sometimes he began barking loudly, and once he lunged forward so suddenly that the babysitter stepped back in fear.
— I’m afraid to be alone with him, — she said.
And we could understand her. We decided that Rex would stay in another room whenever Margaret was alone at home with the child.
Every morning before leaving, I locked him in there. And every time, the same thing happened.
As soon as we started getting ready to leave, Rex became anxious. He scratched at the door, whined, and sometimes barked so loudly that he could be heard even from the street.

But after about a week, my wife noticed something strange. Our son became restless. He used to stay calm with the babysitter, but now he sometimes started crying as soon as Margaret picked him up. At night, the baby also began waking up more often.
We blamed it all on his age until one morning, something happened that finally made me think.
I was about to lock Rex in the room when Margaret approached the crib.
The dog changed instantly. He stood in front of the crib, pinned back his ears, and began to bark. But he was not even looking at the child.
He was looking only at Margaret. As if he were warning her specifically. That day, I told my wife:
— I don’t like this. Rex never behaves like this without a reason.
That evening, we bought a small camera and set it up so that the crib and most of the room were visible.
We did not tell Margaret anything. The next day, we went to work as usual and locked Rex in the next room again.
A few hours later, my wife texted me: “Check the camera.”
I opened the app. At first, nothing unusual was happening. Margaret was feeding the baby, changing his clothes, and walking around the room.
But then the child started crying. Her smile immediately disappeared from her face.
She walked over to the crib, annoyed, and picked the baby up roughly. When he did not stop crying, the woman began shaking him harshly and saying something angrily. Then she put him back down much more roughly than she should have.
But the most terrible thing happened a few minutes later. Somehow, Rex managed to push open the poorly closed door and ran into the room.
When he saw Margaret near the crying child, he immediately stood between her and the crib and began barking loudly. Then we saw something we never expected.
Margaret became angry, grabbed an object lying nearby, and hit Rex, trying to force him to move away.
The dog jumped back. But he did not run away. He stood in front of the crib again and kept barking. At that moment, we were already on our way home.
Margaret tried to explain that the dog had suddenly become aggressive and that she had to defend herself. But she did not know one thing yet: we had seen everything. Margaret never came to our home again, and we kept the camera footage and handed it over to the proper authorities.
