MATTEL offers an innovative addition to its iconic Barbie collection: the first Barbie with Down syndrome

This is a novelty in the toy industry.

An extraordinary collaboration between industry leader Mattel and the US National Down Syndrome Society has produced an innovative doll.

The doll is depicted with a wider bust, smaller ears, a flat nose and almond-shaped eyes, physical characteristics common in people with Down syndrome.

Often these dolls are depicted with high-heeled shoes.

This time, the American manufacturer has included pink splints designed to support the ankles and feet of children with Down syndrome.

This creation, now available for purchase, is part of a new line of products intended for the industry aimed at promoting the integration of the people concerned.

From 2016, the brand offers dolls in different shapes, small sizes or even with hearing devices.

“It’s a way to offer all children the opportunity to identify with the character of Barbie, while encouraging them to play with dolls that stand out,” said Luisa McKnight, brand representative.
