Locals and tourists were drawn to an unusual scene on the Romanian coast. A wounded dolphin, carried in by the waves, was found stranded on the shore. This discovery sparked an immediate effort to try and save the animal, but despite all attempts, the dolphin did not survive.
Experts identified the mammal as a common dolphin (*Delphinus delphis*), one of the three species of marine mammals inhabiting the Black Sea, alongside the harbor porpoise (*Phocoena phocoena*) and the Risso’s dolphin (*Grampus griseus*). Marks on its body suggest it may have been injured by fishing nets.
