Brazilian Umbelina Alves Pereira, 92, has been passionate about sewing for over eight decades.
Her first piece was a baby outfit for a cousin who was about to give birth. She was just eight years old at the time.
Dona Umbelina uses her talent to help those in need. She proudly recalls having helped several people overcome depression through knitting.
Even at her age, Umbelina has no plans to stop and has turned her hobby into therapy.
“It was perfect. I was barely eight years old when I made my first piece, and I remember it as if it were yesterday,” she told Metropoles.
At 16, the teenager left Luís Correia for another city to work as a seamstress.
In the 1960s, she lived in the country’s capital and continued knitting, improving her craft.
According to Dona Umbelina, it is the profession that God gave her: “I love sewing and knitting. I will do it until the end of my life,” she said.
She believes it is important to use her talents to help those in need.
The elderly woman is actively involved in knitting groups at the Santa Maria Community Center and is proud to have helped several people overcome depression.
“I knit to teach, sell, and for my family. I also enjoy participating in workshops and classes,” said the grandmother of nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
