When 29-year-old Sofia was brought to a women’s prison, she immediately caught the attention of the other inmates.
The young woman was calm, barely spoke to anyone, and never tried to show her strength of character. She followed the guards’ rules, stayed away from conflicts, and spent most of her free time alone.
Some decided that Sofia was simply scared.
Rachel believed that most of all — a large, intimidating woman whom the other inmates tried to avoid.
She had been there for several years and was used to enforcing her own rules. There were always a few women around her who laughed at every one of her jokes and supported her in every conflict.
Rachel noticed the newcomer right away.
For the first few days, she simply watched her. Several times, she deliberately bumped Sofia with her shoulder in the corridor. Once, she took her seat at the table, but each time, the young woman simply stepped aside.
Rachel decided that Sofia was afraid of her.

Sofia took a bottle of water and a donut, then sat down on a metal bench in the yard.
She was eating peacefully when she heard loud laughter.
Rachel, along with two friends, was walking straight toward her.
— Get up, the woman ordered.

— Why?
— Because I said so.

Sofia slowly stood up from the bench.

The women beside her laughed. Rachel picked up the bottle of ice-cold water and suddenly poured it directly over Sofia’s head.

Sofia wiped her wet face with her hand. For several seconds, she simply looked at the woman.
— I’m warning you for the last time. Stop.
Rachel stepped almost right up to her.
— And what if I don’t?
She pushed Sofia in the shoulder. The young woman took a step back. Rachel pushed her again, much harder this time. Sofia nearly fell.

When Rachel tried to push the young woman for the third time, Sofia immediately grabbed her arm, stepped to the side, and shoved her away with a sharp movement.
Rachel barely managed to stay on her feet. The laughter around them stopped at once.
— Have you completely lost your mind? she shouted.
Rachel rushed forward and tried to hit Sofia. But her fist did not even reach its target. Sofia easily dodged it. Another punch. Missed again.
She moved completely differently from an ordinary person in a fight. She did not panic, wave her arms around, or retreat. Every movement was precise.
Rachel swung again, but Sofia dodged and delivered a short punch to her body. The woman bent over. Another quick punch followed immediately.
Rachel lost her balance and fell to the ground. Complete silence fell over the yard. No one was laughing anymore.
Sofia could have continued, but instead, she immediately stepped back.
— I warned you.
The guards were already running toward them.

The man looked closely at the young woman.
— Sofia Miller?
