“I’m 10 years old, but I have the body of a one-year-old”: The story of a girl who survived dozens of surgeries to stay alive.

Bella Thomson, a brave 10-year-old girl from Swift Current, is battling three rare diseases: a form of dwarfism, Hirschsprung’s disease, and severe combined immunodeficiency.

Her devoted mother, Kyla Thomson, has been caring for Bella for almost ten years and shares her experience with over 7 million followers on TikTok. Kyla speaks openly about Bella’s illnesses.

In a recent interview with the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation, Kyla discussed Bella’s medical journey. Hirschsprung’s disease, a condition characterized by the absence of nerve cells in parts of the colon, has severely affected Bella and her entire large intestine.

Through social media, the family aims to raise awareness and provide support to other families facing medical challenges. However, despite their positive intentions, they have faced negative backlash.

The Thomsons were recently subjected to online criticism after sharing a viral video in which Kyla holds Bella in front of the camera. In the interview, Kyla expressed her reluctance to respond to negative comments online but acknowledged that this incident was particularly challenging.

Instead of disabling comments, as she had done before, Kyla decided to respond directly to some of the offensive remarks, hoping to explain Bella’s complex medical history.

Bella, who weighs less than 30 pounds due to dwarfism, has spent over 1,000 days in the hospital, undergone numerous surgeries, and survived several septic shocks.

Last year, she underwent a life-saving intestinal transplant. Yet, the Thomsons continue to focus on those who support them.
