Valerio Katoya, who was born with Down syndrome, discovered swimming at the age of three as a means to improve his strength and endurance, thanks to the encouragement of his parents.

Through sheer determination and hard work, Valerio not only mastered swimming but also achieved incredible success in the sport, eventually representing his country in the Olympic Games.

It was during a beach vacation in Lazio, Italy, accompanied by his father and younger sister, Valerio, and his family heard cries for help from two young girls trapped in the water, battling against strong waves and currents.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Valerio and his father sprang into action, diving into the water to rescue the distressed children.

Being an experienced swimmer and Olympian, Valerio knew to keep the girl above water to prevent her from suffocating.

Just as they reached the shore, professional rescuers arrived on the scene. Valerio’s courageous act did not go unnoticed.

His bravery was recognized by the Minister of Sports of Italy, who awarded him a medal for his sports skills.
