Eighteen-year-old Mary had only recently become a maid in the royal palace. She had grown up in a poor family and dreamed only of working honestly and helping her parents escape poverty. The young woman could never have imagined how difficult life behind the walls of the luxurious palace would be.
The servants rose before dawn and worked until late at night. They barely rested, carried heavy buckets of water, washed clothes, cleaned enormous halls, and endlessly obeyed orders. They were poorly fed, so many of them were so exhausted that they could barely remain on their feet.
But more than hunger, everyone feared the king himself.
Terrifying rumors circulated about his cruelty. People said that he punished every mistake so severely that not only the guilty person but their entire family had to pay for it. That was why every servant tried to perform their work without making a single mistake.
“Never enter the king’s chambers unless it is absolutely necessary,” an elderly maid warned her one day. “And if you do enter, keep your eyes lowered and do not remain there for even a minute longer than necessary.”
Mary simply nodded in silence.
That day, she was ordered to clean the royal chambers. The young woman carefully wiped the expensive furniture, replaced the candles, and smoothed the silk sheets on the enormous bed. She had barely slept during the previous several days, and her constant exhaustion was becoming stronger.
After finishing her work, Mary sat on the very edge of the bed for only a few seconds to catch her breath.
She did not even notice her eyes closing.
A moment later, she was already fast asleep, curled up on the soft silk sheets.

“The king is returning!”

“Let her rest.”
