After the grandfather’s death, the house was full of relatives for several days. Some were grieving his death, while others were more interested in what would now happen to the enormous fortune the man had accumulated throughout his life.
The grandfather was very wealthy. He owned several houses, land, shares, and a family company that he had managed for many years.
A few days after the funeral, the lawyer asked the closest relatives to gather in the deceased man’s study. It was there that the grandfather had spent most of his time.
While the lawyer was taking out the documents and the relatives were discussing the property, 11-year-old Leo stood to one side, staring carefully at a painting.
He remembered it perfectly.
The grandfather loved this painting and never allowed anyone even to touch it. Whenever the housekeeper came, the man personally made sure that she did not move the frame. Once, Leo had asked why the painting was so important to him, but his grandfather had simply smiled and replied that some things were better left in their place.

The lawyer carefully examined the safe and then noticed a small key taped to the back of the frame.
A few minutes later, the safe door opened. There was no money or jewelry inside.
Instead, there was a thick folder filled with documents, several photographs, a USB drive, and a sealed envelope. Written on it in the grandfather’s handwriting were the words: “Open only after my death.”
The lawyer opened the envelope and began reading the letter aloud. With every line, the relatives’ faces grew paler.
The grandfather wrote that during the last few months, he had begun to suspect that his eldest son was trying to gain control of the company before the time was right. He had discovered forged documents, suspicious transfers of money from the accounts, and papers bearing his signature that he had never signed.

“If you are reading this letter, it means I am already gone. If my death seems even slightly suspicious, the first person who should be investigated is my eldest son. All the evidence is inside this safe.”
Silence filled the room.

— This is nonsense, — he finally said. — My father wasn’t thinking clearly during his final months.
