During their wedding night, the young wife asked her 89-year-old husband not to touch her, but suddenly the old man ran his hand over his face and removed a mask, revealing his true identity: what happened that night in the newlyweds’ bedroom left the entire city in shock 😳
Alondra stood beside the fireplace, gripping its edge tightly with one hand. The fire was still burning, but the young woman could barely feel its warmth.
Just a few hours earlier, she had become the wife of 89-year-old Arturo Monteverde, one of the richest men in the city.
She did not love him and knew almost nothing about him. But her father owed the banks an enormous amount of money, the family home was going to be taken away within a few weeks, and the company Alondra’s grandfather had spent his entire life building was on the verge of bankruptcy.
Arturo offered a simple solution.
He would pay off all the family’s debts, and Alondra would become his wife.
Her parents did not force her to agree, but the young woman understood perfectly well what would happen if she refused. So two weeks later, she stood at the altar beside a man who was almost seventy years older than her.
The wedding was luxurious but strange. The groom barely spoke to anyone, refused to let anyone photograph him up close, and wore thin leather gloves throughout the entire evening.
Now, at last, they were alone.
Arturo closed the bedroom door and slowly approached his wife.
Alondra immediately stepped back toward the fireplace.
“Please, don’t touch me,” she said quietly. “I need some time.”
The man stopped. For several seconds, he simply stared at her, then suddenly smiled.
“That’s exactly what I wanted to hear.”
Alondra frowned.
“What?”
Instead of answering, Arturo raised his hands to his face. At first, the young woman thought he had suddenly become ill, but then the man caught the skin near his neck with his fingers and slowly began pulling it upward.
Alondra froze. The skin began peeling away from his face. She wanted to scream, but she could not utter a single word.
A few seconds later, the gray hair, wrinkles, and elderly face were in the man’s hands.
A completely different person stood before Alondra. He was around thirty years old. He had dark hair, sharp features, and the same eyes that had seemed to her all evening like the only strangely youthful part of the old man’s face.
Alondra took another step back.
“Who are you?”
The man placed the mask on the table.
“My name is Gael Monteverde.”
“Where is Arturo?”
“Arturo Monteverde doesn’t exist.”

Alondra looked toward the door, but Gael did not even try to stop her.
“You can leave right now. Your family’s debts will still be paid.”
That frightened her even more.
“Then why did we have this wedding?”
Gael walked over to an old wardrobe, took out a folder, and placed it on the bed. Inside were photographs of five young women.
Beneath each photograph was a name and a date.
“Over the past three years, my family has tried to marry me off five times,” he explained. “But none of those women knew what I really looked like.”
Alondra did not understand any of it.
Gael told her that after his father’s death, he had inherited an enormous fortune. Almost immediately, dozens of people appeared around him, eager to become part of the Monteverde family.
That was when his grandfather suggested an unusual way to test his future wife.
Gael was supposed to appear before each chosen woman disguised as the elderly Arturo and see whether she would agree to marry him without love, solely for his money.
“But I agreed because of the money too,” Alondra said.
“No. That’s the difference.”
He pulled another document from the folder. It was a copy of the contract Alondra had signed before the wedding.
Gael showed her the final page.
There was a clause she had not noticed before: after the wedding, she could refuse the marriage and leave, while her family’s debts would still remain fully paid.
“The others found out about this before the ceremony,” Gael said. “And they still demanded additional houses, cars, and money for themselves. You were the only one who asked for nothing.”
Alondra slowly sank into an armchair.
But one question still troubled her.
“Why my family?”
The smile disappeared from Gael’s face.
He walked over to the fireplace and pulled an old photograph from the inside pocket of his jacket. Two young men stood in the picture.
One of them was Alondra’s father.
“Because your family’s bankruptcy wasn’t an accident.”
Alondra suddenly looked up.
Gael told her that several months earlier, he had discovered documents belonging to his late father. They revealed that twenty years ago, Gael’s father had fraudulently taken control of part of Alondra’s family business and later spent years using shell companies to drive their company toward ruin.
Gael had discovered the truth too late.
That was why the money he had used to pay off their debts was not a wedding gift at all.
He was simply returning what his family had once stolen.
Alondra remained silent for a long time.
“So you didn’t need to marry me at all?”
“No.”
“Then why did you do it?”
Gael looked at the old man’s mask lying on the table.
“At first, I wanted to find out what kind of person you were. Then I did something foolish and fell in love before I had the chance to stop myself.”
For the first time that entire evening, Alondra smiled.
