The mafia boss had kept the entire city in fear for many years. Shopkeepers paid him money, officials remained silent, and ordinary people tried not even to look him in the eyes. No one dared to stand up to him.
Emma was the daughter of an ordinary blacksmith. Her family never had enough money, but from childhood her father had taught her one rule: never bow your head to those who consider themselves superior to everyone else.
One day, the mafia’s men came to the blacksmith’s workshop.
“From now on, you will pay twice as much,” one of them said coldly. “The boss has decided.”
The old man could only sigh heavily. He knew that he simply did not have that kind of money.
Emma stepped forward.
“He will not pay a single extra coin.”

The following day, he deliberately came to the central square. Many people were gathered there. He wanted everyone to see what happened to anyone who dared to disobey him.
Emma was dragged forward by force.
“Get on your knees and beg for forgiveness,” the boss said calmly.
The girl looked him straight in the eyes.
“I would rather die.”
A frightened murmur spread through the crowd.
The boss stared at her silently for several seconds and then smirked.
“Then today the entire city will see what happens to those who forget their place.”
He ordered the girl to be taken to an old abandoned warehouse outside the city.
There was a huge concrete enclosure where fighting dogs were kept. Rumor had it that these dogs had already killed several people and that no one had ever left the cage alive.
News of the upcoming execution quickly spread throughout the area. By evening, a huge crowd had gathered near the enclosure. People had come to witness the terrifying spectacle.
The boss deliberately waited until everyone had gathered.
“Remember this day,” he declared loudly. “Anyone who dares to go against me will end up exactly the same way.”
The cage door opened.
Emma was brutally shoved inside, and the heavy bolt slammed shut with a loud metallic clang.
On the opposite side, three more cages slowly opened.
Three enormous fighting dogs emerged from the darkness.
They slowly approached the girl without taking their eyes off her.

The crowd held its breath.
The first dog charged straight at the girl, but at the very last moment, it suddenly stopped. It stared at her carefully and then slowly pressed its head against her hand.
A surprised murmur swept through the crowd.
The other two enormous dogs approached next. Instead of attacking her, they stood beside her and turned toward the people behind the bars, as though they were protecting her.
“Why aren’t they attacking her?!” the boss shouted.
At that moment, an elderly warehouse worker stepped out of the crowd.
“These dogs remember her. Several months ago, she secretly treated their wounds and brought them food when your men were starving them. To them, she is the only person who has ever shown them kindness.”
Furious, the boss ordered his men to enter the cage. But the moment one of the guards took a step forward, all the dogs growled at the same time and lunged toward him instead.
At that exact moment, police sirens sounded outside the warehouse gates. Someone in the crowd had managed to call the police.
A few minutes later, the mafia boss was arrested, while the girl calmly walked out of the cage surrounded by the dogs, which did not leave her side for a single moment until the very end.
For a long time afterward, the entire city talked about how the fighting dogs had refused to obey the man who had raised them to kill and instead protected the only person who had ever shown them kindness.
