My sister disappeared fourteen years ago… And then, while we were going through our deceased grandfather’s belongings, her underwear with embroidered flowers fell out from under his mattress 😨
Almost three weeks passed after our grandfather’s death before our family finally decided to clear out his house.
Our grandfather’s name was Robert. He had lived in that house for more than forty years and hardly ever threw anything away. The closets were filled with old newspapers, boxes of medicine, letters, photographs, and clothes he hadn’t worn in decades.
That day, I went there with my uncle Mark. My mother was supposed to help us too, but she got held up at work.
“Let’s take the bed out first,” my uncle said. “We’ll have to throw the mattress away anyway.”
We went into our grandfather’s bedroom. The room was very dusty. The curtains barely let any light through.
We grabbed the mattress from both sides and lifted it. At that moment, something fell onto the floor. At first, I didn’t even understand what it was.
A small piece of pink fabric. I bent down and picked it up. It was a pair of women’s panties. Old, faded, with small embroidered flowers on the side.
“What is this?” my uncle asked in surprise.
But I wasn’t listening to him anymore. I was staring at the embroidery.
I was only four years old when my older sister Laura disappeared. I barely remembered her, but we had dozens of photographs of her at home.
And in several of those photographs, Laura was wearing clothes on which she had embroidered exactly the same kind of flowers herself. Our mother had taught her how to do it. One petal always came out slightly longer than the others.
I had seen that pattern hundreds of times.
“They’re Laura’s,” I said quietly.
At first, my uncle smiled skeptically.
“You can’t know that.”
“Yes, I can.”
He looked at the fabric again. And his expression changed. Fourteen years earlier, Laura had been sixteen. She disappeared in July. That day, she told our mother she was going to meet a friend, left the house at around four in the afternoon, and never came back.
The police searched for her for several weeks. They searched the forest, the river, and bus stations. They put up photographs everywhere. They questioned the neighbors. But they found nothing.
Our grandfather had helped more than anyone else. He joined volunteers in the searches, printed missing-person posters, and even offered money to anyone who could provide any information at all.
And all that time, something belonging to Laura had been lying under his mattress.
“Put that back where it was,” my uncle suddenly said.
I looked at him.
“What?”
“Don’t touch anything else. We’re calling the police.”
That was when I noticed that he was scared too. Twenty minutes later, my mother arrived. When she saw what we had found, her hands began to shake. She stared at the tiny flowers for several seconds and then sat down on the edge of a chair.
“I embroidered those with her,” she whispered.
After that, we didn’t touch anything else in the room. I could never have imagined that later that same evening, something so horrifying about our family would come to light that it would leave us all completely shocked. 😳😰 You can find the rest of the story in the first comment 👇👇
The police arrived that same evening. The house was sealed off. Investigators took the mattress, the clothing, and several boxes from the closet.
But they made the most important discovery two days later. Behind the old wardrobe in the bedroom, they found a wooden panel that looked different from the others.
When they removed it, they discovered a small hiding place behind the wall. Inside were photographs of Laura, her school bracelet, an old comb, and several letters.
One of those letters changed everything. Laura herself had written it.
In the letter, she wrote that our grandfather forced her to keep some kind of “family secret” and threatened that if she told anyone, something terrible would happen to her mother.
But that wasn’t even the worst part. Investigators checked phone records, old witness statements, and our grandfather’s documents.
And they discovered that on the day Laura disappeared, a neighbor had seen our grandfather’s car near an abandoned house several miles outside the town.
Fourteen years earlier, no one had paid much attention to that information. Our grandfather had told the police that he hadn’t left the house at all that day.
A week later, investigators went to the abandoned house.
Behind it was an old well that had been covered with wooden boards for years. When they removed the boards, they found human remains inside. The forensic examination took almost a month.
It was Laura.
Investigators reconstructed what had happened that night. Laura had been planning to tell her mother that her grandfather had been abusing her for years. She had warned him that she would no longer remain silent.
Our grandfather tried to stop her. An argument broke out between them. He struck the girl, and she lost consciousness.
Terrified of the consequences, he took her to the old house and hid her body in the well. Then he returned home, and the very next day, he joined everyone else in searching for his “missing granddaughter.”
For fourteen years, he participated in the search for someone whose fate he had known from the very beginning. But for some reason, there was one thing he couldn’t bring himself to throw away: those pink panties with the tiny flowers.
Perhaps he kept them as a reminder. Or perhaps he was simply afraid that someone might find them in the trash. Our grandfather died without ever confessing.
