Almost all the women in that prison were afraid of the guard, Victoria.
She had worked there for more than ten years and knew perfectly well how dependent the inmates were on the staff. Victoria constantly abused her authority and especially enjoyed humiliating newcomers.
She could force a woman to make her bed several times in a row, send her to mop the floor right after she had already cleaned it, or deliberately take away her lunch for some minor offense.
The other guards tried not to interfere. Everyone knew Victoria’s character and understood that arguing with her was useless.

One day, a new inmate named Emma was brought to the prison.
She was thirty-two years old. She had received a three-year sentence for attacking a man during a fight near a bar. Before that, Emma had never been in prison, and during her first few days, she barely spoke to anyone.
But Victoria noticed her immediately. Unlike most newcomers, Emma did not look frightened. She followed the staff’s orders, but she never lowered her head when someone spoke to her.
That annoyed Victoria.
On the third day, Emma came into the cafeteria with the other women, took a tray, and sat down at an empty table. She had just started eating when Victoria appeared beside her. Several inmates immediately fell silent.
They already knew that look on the guard’s face. Victoria pulled out her baton and stood next to Emma for several seconds, as if waiting for her to become afraid.
But the young woman continued eating calmly. Then Victoria struck the metal table with her baton as hard as she could. A loud bang rang out.
The glass tipped over, the tray slid off the table, and almost all of Emma’s lunch ended up on the floor.
Silence filled the cafeteria. Emma slowly looked first at the food and then at the guard.
— Stand up, Victoria ordered. — You are going to clean the toilets.
— Why?
A mocking smile appeared on Victoria’s face.
— Because I said so.
Emma was silent for several seconds.
— I did not break any rules. You have no right to force me to do this for no reason.
After those words, several inmates exchanged frightened looks.
No one usually spoke to Victoria in that tone.
— What did you say?
— You heard me perfectly well.
Victoria stepped even closer.
— You have been here for three days, and you have already decided to lecture me about my rights?
— No. I simply will not allow you to humiliate me for your own entertainment.
The guard’s face changed. She grabbed Emma by the shoulder and tried to force her out of the chair.

Emma suddenly grabbed her hand. Victoria did not even have time to understand what was happening. The inmate sprang up from the chair, pushed the guard away, and hit her.
Victoria tried to grab the baton, but Emma hit her again and then knocked her to the floor. The entire cafeteria froze. No one screamed or even moved.
The women simply stared at the person almost all the inmates had feared for years and could not believe their eyes.
A few seconds later, other guards rushed into the cafeteria.
They pulled Emma away from Victoria, twisted her arms behind her back, and put handcuffs on her.
— You are crazy! Victoria shouted as she got up from the floor. — You will never see a normal cell again!
Emma said nothing.
She only looked calmly at the guard. That same evening, she was indeed sent to solitary confinement.
For attacking a prison employee, Emma received a serious punishment. She spent several weeks almost completely alone, leaving her cell only when she was allowed to.
She understood that she had acted wrongly. But something else surprised her much more.
When Emma returned to the regular block a few weeks later, she immediately noticed changes.
Victoria still worked there. But now she was completely different. She no longer struck tables with her baton.
She no longer forced women to do meaningless work for her own enjoyment. She no longer threw away food or shouted for no reason.
Even with newcomers, she now simply explained the rules and then walked away.
