The king promised to marry a simple girl from the common people if she could tame his wild horse. But the ruler could never have imagined that just one day later, he would discover a secret that would change his life forever… 😮
For several weeks, the entire kingdom had been talking about only one horse.
The king had bought it from a famous horse breeder from distant lands. It was an enormous black stallion of an extremely rare breed. An unimaginable fortune had been paid for it, and all the courtiers were certain that the king would now own the most magnificent horse in the entire kingdom.
But everything turned out completely differently. From the very first day, the stallion refused to accept his new master.
Whenever the king approached, the horse immediately pinned back its ears, neighed loudly, reared up and struck the ground with its hooves. Several times it nearly knocked down even the most experienced stablemen, and once it kicked the wooden stable gate so hard that it split in half.
The more people tried to break its spirit by force, the more furious the stallion became.
Several weeks passed.
The horse almost stopped eating, slept poorly, remained constantly nervous and would not allow anyone near it. Even the most experienced stablemen began to fear entering its stall.
One morning, one of the soldiers decided to put a heavy chain bridle on the stallion.
The horse suddenly reared up and struck him with its hoof. The man remained unconscious for several days. After that incident, the entire palace was filled with anxiety.
Some advised selling the stallion to another ruler. Others demanded that they get rid of it, believing such an animal was far too dangerous.
Even the king was beginning to regret his purchase. That was when he noticed a young girl named Mary.
She was the daughter of a poor farmer and had recently started working at the palace as an assistant in the stables. While everyone else tried to stay away from the stallion, the girl quietly came to its stall every day and spent a long time silently observing it.
One day, the king saw her standing beside the horse.
“Why are you standing here? Aren’t you afraid?”
The girl looked calmly at him.
“I’m not the one who should be afraid. He is.”
The king frowned.
“What do you mean by that?”
“This horse isn’t angry because he is wild. He simply no longer trusts anyone.”
The courtiers exchanged glances.
No one had ever dared to speak so directly to the king.
He took several steps toward the girl.
“So, in your opinion, my best men understand nothing?”
“They are trying to make him afraid. But fear never creates trust.”
The king smirked.
“Very well. If you are so wise, try it yourself.”
The girl remained silent. The king continued:
“If you can tame this stallion, I will grant you any wish.”
“Any wish?”
“Any wish.”
The girl looked directly into his eyes.
“Then I want to become your wife.”
The courtyard fell completely silent.
A second later, loud laughter erupted. The courtiers, guards and stablemen could not believe their ears.
The king laughed as well.
“You are far too bold for a simple girl.”
“Perhaps.”
“Very well. If this stallion willingly obeys you tomorrow, I will keep my word.”
Mary simply nodded calmly. The king was certain that he would never see her again. But the next day, something happened that left the entire palace, and even the king himself, completely shocked. 😳🫣 The continuation of this story can be found in the first comment. 👇
The next morning, almost the entire palace gathered near the large enclosure. Everyone wanted to see how this mad challenge would end. As soon as the stallion noticed the crowd, it immediately became nervous. It neighed loudly, struck the ground with its hooves and raced around the enclosure.
The king watched with a satisfied smile.
Mary slowly entered. She had no whip, no ropes and no weapons. The stallion immediately charged toward her.
The crowd cried out in fear. But the girl did not take a single step backward.
When only a few metres remained between them, the horse suddenly stopped.
The courtyard became so quiet that only its heavy breathing could be heard.
Mary slowly raised her hand and began speaking softly to the stallion.
No one could hear her words. Almost a minute passed.
Gradually, the horse stopped pinning back its ears. Then it carefully took a step forward and lowered its head on its own.
The girl slowly stroked its neck.
The stallion even closed its eyes. A murmur of astonishment swept through the crowd. But the real shock was still to come. Mary asked for the gate to be opened.
Without a saddle and without anyone’s help, she calmly climbed onto the enormous stallion’s back.
Everyone expected it to become wild again.
Instead, the horse slowly walked across the courtyard as though it had known its rider for many years.
The king could not take his eyes off them.
When the girl returned, he immediately approached her.
“How did you do it?”
Mary remained silent for a moment.
“When I approached his stall yesterday, I saw blood near his mane.”
The king was surprised.
The girl carefully moved the stallion’s long mane aside.
Everyone saw an old, deep wound behind its ear, hidden beneath the thick hair. Covered by an expensive ornament, it had remained unnoticed for a long time and was constantly rubbed by the heavy bridle.
Whenever people tried to put new tack on him or sharply pulled the reins, the animal experienced unbearable pain.
That was why he attacked.
Silence fell over the courtyard.
The finest healers immediately examined the stallion and confirmed the girl’s words.
For several weeks, they treated the wound, changed the bandages and completely stopped using the heavy bridle.
Very soon, the stallion became calm and obedient and began trusting people again.
That same evening, the king summoned Mary once more.
“You did not only save this horse,” he said quietly. “You also saved me from the greatest mistake of my life. I wanted to punish an animal that was only trying to show that it was in pain.”
The girl smiled.
“Sometimes all it takes is looking carefully before drawing conclusions.”
The king remained silent for a long time.
Then he removed the golden ring from his finger and held it out to Mary.
“I gave my word before the entire palace. And a king has no right to break his promise.”
