The forest seemed endless in the darkness of the night. A freezing wind swept through the towering pine trees, dry branches cracked beneath the wheels of the wheelchair, and somewhere far away, night birds called to one another. On a narrow forest road stood a wheelchair with an elderly gray-haired man sitting in it. His hands trembled not only from the cold but also from a pain that no medicine could ease.
Just a short while earlier, his own children had brought him there.
“You’ll have more peace and quiet here, Father,” the eldest son said with a cold smirk.
“Don’t worry. Someone will find you soon,” his daughter added without even looking him in the eyes.
The old man knew they were lying. He had watched them remove the bag of water from his wheelchair, take away his phone, then quickly get into their car and drive off without looking back even once.
A few months earlier, a notary had accidentally revealed in front of the children that their father had never updated his will. The large house, several plots of land, and substantial savings would only become theirs after his death. From that day on, they no longer seemed to see him as their father. They argued more and more often about the future inheritance until, one day, they decided waiting was taking too long.
The old man sat alone among the dark trees for hours. He tried to call for help, but his voice quickly gave out. The wheels of his wheelchair sank into the damp ground, making it impossible for him to move on his own.
“Can money really make you forget the one who gave you life?…” he whispered as he stared into the dark sky.
Time dragged by agonizingly slowly. The moon climbed higher, and suddenly the forest fell into an eerie silence.
Then came a faint crack.
Another one.
Something heavy was approaching.
Out of the darkness emerged a huge gray wolf. It walked calmly, without haste, carefully watching the old man. His heart pounded so violently that he could barely breathe.
“So… this is the end…” he whispered as he closed his eyes.
But instead of an attack, he heard something completely unexpected.
The wolf let out a soft whimper.
The old man cautiously opened his eyes and saw the animal standing only a few steps away. It wasn’t growling or baring its teeth. Instead, it stared intently into his face, as if trying to recognize him.
For several seconds, they silently looked at each other.
Then the wolf suddenly lifted its head and let out a long, powerful howl.

One wolf stayed beside the old man while the other two ran toward the road.
“What are you doing?…” the old man whispered, unable to understand what was happening.
About half an hour passed.
Suddenly, a dog barked somewhere in the distance.
Then human voices echoed through the forest.
The wolves had run to a small farm on the edge of the woods. They circled the yard for a long time, howling loudly without leaving. At first, the farmer wanted to chase them away, but he quickly realized the animals seemed to be deliberately trying to lead him somewhere.
“I don’t like this… I’m going to see what’s going on,” the man said to his neighbor as he grabbed a powerful flashlight.
The wolves were indeed waiting for the people. They slowly walked ahead, constantly looking back to make sure they were being followed.
In this way, they led several villagers directly to the old man.
“My God… He’s freezing! Hurry, call an ambulance!” a woman shouted as she covered him with her jacket.
As soon as the people reached him, the wolves quietly stepped aside and disappeared into the trees without a trace.
At the hospital, the doctors said that if he had remained in the cold for another hour or two, they would not have been able to save him.
The police quickly discovered who had abandoned him in the forest. Surveillance cameras at a nearby gas station had recorded the children’s car, and investigators found messages on the younger son’s phone in which his older brother had written: “The important thing is that they don’t find the body right away. Then no one will be able to prove anything.”
Those messages became the key piece of evidence in court.
The children were found guilty of attempted murder of a helpless person. They received neither the house, nor the land, nor the money.
A few months later, the old man completely rewrote his will.
He left everything he owned to the farming family who, in the middle of the night and without fearing the wolves, set out to save a complete stranger.
