When Captain Emma’s group received orders to leave for another mission, none of the soldiers expected anything unusual.
The operation was supposed to take several hours. They had to reach an abandoned building, retrieve important documents, and return to base before nightfall.
Emma had been leading the group for almost two years. She was strict, rarely raised her voice, and never explained her decisions twice.
Some of the soldiers did not like that. Especially Jack.
— One day, her stubbornness will destroy us, — he often told his comrades.
That day, his words almost came true.
When the group reached the building, Emma immediately sensed that something was wrong. It was too quiet all around them.
— Everyone back, — she suddenly ordered.
— We are almost there, — Jack objected. — There are only a hundred meters left.
— I said back.
But it was too late. Gunshots rang out. The group had fallen into an ambush.
The next few minutes turned into a real nightmare. The soldiers tried to retreat while covering one another, and Emma kept giving orders and changing their escape route.
At one point, Jack saw three of his comrades who had been left behind.
— We have to go back for them!
He was about to run back, but Emma grabbed him by his body armor.
— No!
— Our men are there!
— If you go back, you will die with them!
Jack looked at her with hatred.
— You are just abandoning them?
— Follow the order!
Emma ordered the others to move toward the evacuation point.
Twenty minutes later, the helicopter arrived. But the three soldiers were no longer with them. A heavy silence filled the helicopter. No one spoke. Jack sat across from Emma and did not take his eyes off her.
Michael, Daniel, and several other soldiers were nearby. All of them had known the dead men for many years.
The farther the helicopter flew from the operation site, the stronger their anger became.
Finally, Jack stood up.
— Three of our friends were left there because of you.
Emma looked at him.
— Sit down.
— No.
Jack stepped closer.
— If you had allowed us to go back, we could have saved them.
— You would not have come back.
— How do you know that?
— I am the commander here.
But the man no longer wanted to listen.
Michael stood up as well.
— You did not even try to save them.
— I was saving the others, — Emma replied calmly.
Those words made the men even angrier.
— Saving them? — Jack sneered. — Then why are there three empty seats now?
Emma said nothing. It was precisely her silence that they took as an admission of guilt. A few minutes later, one of the men opened the helicopter’s rear ramp.
A strong wind rushed into the cabin.
Emma turned sharply.
— What are you doing?
— You always said that people must answer for their mistakes, — Jack said.
For the first time, Emma realized that they were serious.
— Close the ramp. Immediately.
But no one obeyed her. Two men grabbed her by the arms.
— Have you lost your minds?!
— This is for our men.
Despite Emma’s resistance, the men led her toward the open edge.
— Jack, listen to me! You do not know the whole truth!

Then Daniel suddenly turned pale.
— What have we done?..
They were sure that their commander had died. But they did not know one important detail.
Before takeoff, Emma had put on an emergency parachute. During the mission, the group was supposed to cross mountainous terrain, so command had ordered the senior officer to carry additional rescue equipment.
As she fell, Emma tried to stabilize her body for several seconds and then pulled the ring. Above her, the parachute opened.
She landed far from the base, suffered several injuries, but remained alive. Meanwhile, the helicopter was already approaching the airfield.
When the soldiers got out, they were met by the base commander and several officers.
— Where is Captain Emma? — the commander immediately asked.
No one answered.
Then an officer revealed something the men did not yet know. Intelligence had just finished analyzing the operation. It turned out that Emma had noticed signs of a second ambush and had therefore ordered an immediate retreat.
The three dead soldiers were too far ahead, and it was already impossible to reach them. But the most terrible thing was discovered later.
The enemy had deliberately left the path to them open. They were waiting for the other soldiers to try to return for their comrades. Several dozen armed men were positioned around the building.
If Emma had allowed the group to turn back, no one would have made it out of that place alive.
— She lost three men, — the commander said quietly, — because she was saving everyone else.
Jack slowly lowered his head. Now everything became clear. The woman they had just decided to punish for the deaths of their comrades had actually saved the life of every one of them.
But the worst was still ahead for the men.
One of the officers’ voices rang out:
— We have received the signal from Captain Emma’s emergency beacon. She is alive.
Jack abruptly lifted his head. A few hours later, a rescue team found Emma.
And when she was brought to the base, she saw the same soldiers who had thrown her out of the helicopter.
The men stood silently and could not look her in the eyes.
Emma stopped in front of Jack.
He wanted to say something, but she did not let him.
— I understand why you were angry about your friends, — the woman said quietly. — I wanted to save them too. But sometimes a commander has to make a decision that people will hate them for, so that everyone else can make it home.
