We had just moved into our new house, but on the very first evening, our dog began barking wildly at an old painting hanging on the wall and covered with a thick cloth. When I finally tore the cloth away, I was horrified by what I saw hidden behind it… 😱
My husband and I had recently moved into a large old house that we bought at a very good price. The house was beautiful, spacious, and fully furnished. The previous owners had been in a hurry to move and left almost everything behind, including several old paintings. One of them hung in the living room and was completely covered with a heavy, thick cloth. We were told that it was an old family heirloom and that it would be better not to touch it. At the time, those words did not seem strange to me.
Our dog was very calm. In all the years we had owned him, he had never barked without a reason, so his behavior on the very first evening made me extremely uneasy.
The moment he entered the living room, he immediately stared at the covered painting. A few seconds later, he began barking loudly, growling, and standing on his hind legs as he tried to tear the cloth from the wall.
“What is wrong with you today?” I asked irritably.
But the dog did not even look at me and continued scratching at the wall.
I walked closer and grabbed him by the collar.
“Stop! Calm down right now! What did you see there?”
The dog pulled free from my hands and rushed toward the painting again. He barked so loudly that the sound echoed throughout the entire house.
My husband only smiled.
“He probably smells the old fabric. Just ignore it.”
But over the next few days, the situation only got worse.
Every time the dog passed that wall, he behaved in exactly the same way. He could sit in front of the painting for hours without taking his eyes off it. At night, he would suddenly jump up, run into the living room, and begin barking loudly again.
After a week, I finally lost my patience.
“That is enough! Calm down already!” I shouted angrily at the dog. “Why are you so obsessed with this painting?”
But the dog seemed not to hear me. He barked loudly, stood on his hind legs, and continued scratching at the cloth covering the painting.
“Fine, I will see for myself what is there!”
I tore the heavy cloth away with one sharp movement. Behind it was indeed an old painting in a massive wooden frame, but something else immediately caught my attention. The continuation of this story can be found in the first comment. 👇
In the lower corner of the wall, directly behind the frame, there was a narrow crack. At that exact moment, a long snake slowly began crawling out of it.
I screamed and jumped backward. A few seconds later, a second snake appeared from the same crack, followed by a third.
We immediately called a professional snake removal service.
When the specialists took down the painting and opened part of the wall, they were completely shocked. Behind it was a large hollow space extending deep beneath the foundation of the house. It was a real snake den. According to the specialists, dozens of snakes had been living under the house for years and were constantly crawling through small cracks into the space behind the wall. The painting covered the exact spot where they most often came out.
Later, the head of the team told us:
“If you had not discovered this now, sooner or later the snakes would have started crawling directly into the rooms, especially at night when the house becomes warmer.”
Only then did I understand why our dog had refused to leave that wall from the very first day. He was not barking at the painting. He could smell the snakes hiding behind it and was desperately trying to warn us about the danger before someone in our family came face to face with them.
