Actor James Darren, known for his roles in TV series such as *T.J. Hooker* and *Star Trek: Deep Space Nine*, as well as films like *Gidget*, has passed away at the age of 88.

According to TMZ, the seasoned actor unexpectedly passed away Monday night at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles while he was asleep. As of now, the exact cause of his death remains unknown. His son, Jim Moret, told TMZ that Darren had been a patient in the hospital’s cardiac unit due to heart issues.

It appears that during an earlier visit to the hospital for an aortic valve replacement, doctors deemed him too weak to safely undergo the procedure. Afterward, he was sent home but soon returned to the hospital as his condition quickly worsened.

“I always thought he’d pull through,” his son Jim shared, “because he was just so cool. He was always cool.”

Darren rose to fame as a teen idol playing the surfer Moondoggie in the 1959 film *Gidget*. He reprised this role in the sequels *Gidget Goes Hawaiian* and *Gidget Goes to Rome*.

In the series *T.J. Hooker*, he portrayed Jim Corrigan, a recurring police officer. Over four seasons, he appeared a total of 66 times.

In addition to his acting career, James Darren was also a singer, notably performing the theme song for *Gidget*. He also directed several episodes of popular TV series, including *The A-Team*, *Melrose Place*, and *Beverly Hills, 90210*.

Rest in peace, James Darren.
