After settling into a large mansion outside of Illinois, Nicole and Christian McDonald realized that having only one child in such a vast environment could feel a bit abstract. This led them to consider expanding their family.
In early 2015, Nicole learned that she was expecting and was excited during the first few months. However, an ultrasound revealed that she was expecting conjoined twins. The doctors at Nicole’s clinic shared alarming statistics regarding this situation. The babies would be born with their heads fused, and there were only a few cases of successful separation of conjoined twins.
After reflecting on their options, Nicole and Christian decided to give their sons a chance. In September 2015, Jayden and Anias McDonald were born. In the meantime, they had found a clinic in New York ready to receive them, which forced them to temporarily relocate to the city.
A team of 40 specialists performed a 27-hour operation on the 13-month-old twins, costing the parents $2.5 million. Today, Jayden and Anias are nearly eight years old. Initially, after their separation, the boys had slower development compared to their peers, but this gap has been decreasing over time.
Currently, Anias is the only one still facing difficulties, particularly with language and mobility issues, but Nicole and Christian hope that medical interventions will help them overcome these challenges in the coming years.
Nicole regularly shares her sons’ progress on social media. She considers what happened to her children a true miracle and wishes for their story to be known by as many people as possible.
