At the auction, no one wanted to buy the old, sick horse even for a few pennies, but suddenly an old man offered an enormous sum for her. Everyone around called him crazy, but no one knew what secret the old man was hiding 😳
That day, the annual horse auction was taking place at a huge ranch.
From early morning, dozens of farmers, stable owners, and wealthy buyers had arrived. Some were looking for young stallions for competitions, while others were choosing horses for their farms.
The bidding moved quickly.
The auctioneer stood on a wooden platform and loudly called out the prices as buyers raised their hands and outbid one another.
But when an old white mare was led into the enclosure, laughter suddenly broke out among the crowd.
The animal looked terrible.
Her white coat was covered in dirt, she was badly underweight, and she could barely stand on her legs.
She took a few steps, then suddenly collapsed to the ground.
— And who is going to buy that? — one of the men laughed.
— She should not even be sold anymore, — another added.
The auctioneer understood that he would not get much money for this horse either.
— We’ll start at one hundred dollars! — he announced.
No one raised a hand.
— Fifty!
Once again, there was silence.
The mare lay on the ground with her head lowered while the people around her kept talking and laughing.
— Twenty dollars! — the auctioneer finally said.
But even at that price, no one was interested.
The auctioneer looked at the workers irritably.
— Take her away. We are just wasting time here.
Two men were already walking toward the enclosure when a calm voice suddenly came from the back rows:
— One hundred thousand dollars.
For several seconds, everything around them fell completely silent.
The auctioneer even lowered his microphone.
— Excuse me?.. How much?
An elderly man, around seventy years old, slowly stepped out of the crowd. He was wearing an old jacket, a simple shirt, and a worn-out cowboy hat.
He did not look at all like someone who could pay such an amount.
— One hundred thousand dollars, — the old man repeated.
People began to laugh.
— Old man, do you even understand what you are buying?
— She could die tomorrow!
— You could buy ten young horses for that kind of money!
But the elderly man did not even look at them.
He took out documents and confirmed that he really had the money.
The auctioneer asked him several times whether he was sure about his decision. The old man only nodded. A few minutes later, the deal was completed.
Everyone around called him crazy, but none of those present could imagine what secret the old man was hiding or why he had paid such an enormous amount for the mare. 😨😰 You can find the continuation of the story in the first comment 👇👇
But instead of taking the horse away immediately, the old man slowly walked into the enclosure. He approached the animal and stopped beside her.
The white mare did not even lift her head.
Then the man took off his hat, knelt directly in the mud, and said quietly:
— Well, hello, my girl. I finally found you.
The mare suddenly moved.
She slowly lifted her head and looked at the old man for several seconds.
Then something strange happened. The animal tried to stand up. She could not do it on the first attempt. The old man placed his hand on her neck.
— You do not have to. Stay lying down.
But the mare tried to rise again. The people around stopped laughing. Then one of the ranch workers suddenly asked:
— Do you know this horse?
The old man was silent for a long time. Then he told them the truth.
Almost twenty years earlier, he had owned a small ranch. Back then, this white mare had still been very young.
Her name was Luna. The old man had raised her himself. But one day, during a terrible fire, the man became trapped inside a burning barn.
People could not get close because of the flames. It was Luna who somehow broke free from her tether, made her way to the barn, and helped her owner get out.
The old man suffered severe burns, but he survived. A few months later, his life fell apart.
Because of his debts, he lost his ranch, his property, and all of his horses. Luna was sold.
For many years, the man tried to find out where she had gone, but every trace of her disappeared.
He became wealthy only much later, after building his own company.
He had money, a large house, and a new ranch. But there was one thing he never forgot.
A few weeks earlier, the old man had accidentally seen a photo of the animals being offered at this auction.
He recognized Luna immediately.
By the small scar near her left eye.
That was why he had not come there to buy a horse.
He had come to take an old friend home.
— One hundred thousand dollars is madness, — someone in the crowd said quietly.
The old man looked at Luna lying in front of him and replied:
— To you, she is worth twenty dollars. But to me, my life was once worth exactly as much as what this horse did for me.
