Pregnant Alina, holding her large belly with both hands, struggled to her feet from the wet ground and took a few unsteady steps toward the car. Her face was pale, tears streamed down her cheeks, and her voice trembled so badly that her words were barely understandable.
Her husband didn’t even look her in the eyes.
— Stop putting on a show. This is all your fault. Sit here for a while, calm down, and you’ll find your way back to the road somehow.
— It’s a forest… It’s already getting dark… Please, don’t go…
She reached out her hand to him, but he slammed the car door shut. A second later, the engine roared to life, the tires splashed mud all over her, and the car slowly drove away.
Alina ran after it for a few more seconds, as long as her strength allowed.

But the red taillights grew smaller and smaller until they disappeared completely around a bend in the forest road.
She was alone.
The silence around her was so deep that she could hear the wind swaying the tops of the pine trees. Somewhere far away, a bird cried out, and then the frightening silence returned.
The woman slowly sank down beside a fallen tree and covered her face with her hands. At last, she understood the terrible truth.
Over the past few months, her husband had constantly asked about her documents, shown interest in her bank accounts, urged her to sign a power of attorney, and tried to convince her to transfer part of her inheritance into a joint account. After her parents died, Alina had inherited a large sum of money and a big house, and now everything fell into place.
He had never intended to save her.
He had deliberately brought her to this remote wilderness, hoping that no one would ever find out what had happened there.
If she died, their baby would never be born, and he would become the only person able to claim part of her estate.
The thought made her blood run cold.
She tried to call emergency services, but her phone displayed only one message: “No Service.”
Darkness was falling quickly. The cold crept beneath her clothes, her legs trembled with exhaustion, and painful cramps gripped her stomach more and more often.

The wolf took another step. Then another. The distance between them kept shrinking.

The wolf raised its head, stared intently at something behind her, and suddenly let out a long, thunderous growl.
Alina had never heard anything like it before.
A few seconds later, the heavy sound of breaking branches echoed through the woods. She slowly turned her head. Emerging from the darkness was a huge brown bear. The predator was walking straight toward her.
Only then did she understand why the wolf hadn’t attacked her.
It wasn’t looking at her at all.
It was watching the bear.
The next moment, the wolf charged.
The forest erupted with roaring, growling, and the crashing of breaking branches. Alina pressed herself against the ground, covering her head with her hands.
She couldn’t see the fight. She could only hear the heavy blows, the terrifying growls, and feel the earth trembling beneath her.
Then, just as suddenly as it had begun, everything fell silent.
Almost a minute passed.
Then the same wolf slowly emerged from the darkness.
There were traces of blood on its fur, but it walked confidently toward the woman and, unexpectedly, sat down beside her.
It didn’t growl. It didn’t bare its teeth. It simply looked at her.
Then it turned its head toward the forest road and took a few steps, as if inviting her to follow.
Alina hesitated for a long time, but she had no other choice.
She got to her feet and slowly followed it.
The wolf stayed ahead of her the entire time, occasionally stopping to wait until she caught up.
This continued for nearly an hour. Then, suddenly, lights appeared ahead.
A small forest ranger station.
As soon as the woman reached the people there, the wolf stopped at the edge of the forest. A forest ranger rushed to Alina, helped her sit down, and immediately called an ambulance.
When the ranger turned around to point out where the wolf was standing, the animal was already gone.
A few days later, the police arrested her husband.
It turned out that security cameras at a gas station had recorded him studying the route to the remote forest in advance. Investigators also found messages on his phone exchanged with his mistress, in which he had written only one sentence:
“After this trip, all the money will finally be mine.”
The court sentenced him to many years in prison.
