After the death of his young wife, the chieftain accused an innocent dwarf of witchcraft and ordered him to be thrown to the wolves to be torn apart. But when the beasts surrounded the prisoner, something completely unexpected happened… 😳
After the death of the chieftain’s young wife, the entire village fell into mourning. At least, that’s how it appeared from the outside. People gathered in the village square, whispered near the wells, and discussed only one thing — how a healthy young woman who had been walking through the village and smiling at passersby just a few days earlier could have died so suddenly.
No one understood what had happened.
The chieftain was devastated by grief. He rarely left his home, stopped receiving visitors, and spoke only with the village elders. However, alongside his sorrow, another emotion gradually began to grow inside him — anger.
He demanded that the person responsible be found.
Several days passed, but no one could explain the cause of the young woman’s death. Then rumors began to spread among the villagers.
At first, someone said it was a curse.
Then another person recalled old legends.
Soon, the villagers were whispering about only one man.
A dwarf named Thomas.
Thomas had lived in the village for as long as even the oldest residents could remember. Because of his short stature, many people had treated him with suspicion since childhood. In those days, people were highly superstitious. They believed in omens, spirits, and curses, and thought that an unusual appearance could be connected to witchcraft.
But Thomas had never harmed anyone. Quite the opposite.
For more than twenty years, he had faithfully served the chieftain. He woke up before everyone else and went to sleep after everyone else. Every day he fed the horses, cleaned the stables, carried water, prepared hay, milked the cows, and performed the hardest tasks.
In winter, he spent hours clearing snow around the farm buildings.
In summer, he worked under the scorching sun. If the chieftain needed help during the night, Thomas came without a single complaint.
Many villagers couldn’t even remember a time when he had raised his voice at anyone. But as soon as the rumors appeared, people forgot all the good he had done.
They began saying that the dwarf was responsible for the death of the chieftain’s wife.
That he had placed a curse on her.
That he used dark powers.
When the guards came for Thomas, he was in the barn.
He was laying out fresh hay for the horses.
“Why are you taking me?” he asked in confusion.
“You know exactly why.”
“But I haven’t done anything.”
“You can tell that to the chieftain.”
Thomas was brought to the village square. The furious chieftain stood before him.
“Confess,” he demanded. “What did you do to my wife?”
“Nothing, my lord.”
“Don’t lie.”
“I haven’t even seen her in months. I’ve spent almost all my time working in the barn. Ask anyone.”
“You think I’m going to believe you?”
“It’s the truth.”
“The people say otherwise.”
Thomas slowly shook his head.
“People have always said otherwise about me simply because I’m different from them.”
But the chieftain no longer wanted to listen.
Perhaps deep down he understood that the accusations made no sense.
Perhaps he simply needed someone to blame.
Or perhaps he had long wanted to get rid of a man who constantly reminded him of old superstitions and irritated him simply by existing.
A few days later, the chieftain announced the sentence. Thomas was to be thrown into the enclosure with specially trained wolves.
These animals had been raised for hunting and guarding. They were larger than ordinary wolves, understood their masters’ commands, and were considered extremely dangerous.
The news quickly spread throughout the region.
On the day of the execution, nearly the entire village gathered around the large wooden enclosure.
Thomas was led out in chains. He looked exhausted, but he continued repeating the same words:
“I am innocent.”
No one listened to him. The chieftain climbed onto a wooden platform and gave a signal. The gates opened. The guards shoved Thomas inside.
A few seconds later, four enormous wolves were released from the opposite side. An uneasy murmur swept through the crowd. The beasts slowly moved toward the man.
One wolf circled him from the left.
Another approached from the right.
The other two stopped directly in front of him.
Thomas closed his eyes.
He was certain these were the final seconds of his life. But when the wolves surrounded the prisoner, something incredible happened 😱🫣 The continuation of this extraordinary story can be found in the first comment 👇
But something strange happened.
The wolves did not attack. Quite the opposite. They stared at the man attentively. Then one of the animals unexpectedly stepped closer and gently touched his hand with its nose.
The crowd froze.
The second wolf sat beside him.
The third lay down at his feet.
And the fourth suddenly turned toward the people behind the fence and let out a loud growl.
The villagers exchanged confused glances.
No one understood what was happening. At that moment, a very old hunter stepped forward from the crowd.
For many years, he had trained these animals.
The old man looked at the chieftain and said loudly:
“These wolves remember him.”
“What do you mean, remember him?” the chieftain asked with a frown.
“Several years ago, a forest fire broke out. A mother wolf died, leaving her cubs behind in the den. Everyone was afraid to go near them. Only Thomas rescued them from the flames and fed them with his own hands for several months.”
A surprised murmur spread through the crowd.
The old man continued:
“These are the very same cubs you later ordered to be raised for hunting. They grew up and became your wolves. But they never forgot the man who saved their lives.”
The chieftain turned pale.
Indeed, many years earlier, Thomas had spent weeks with bandaged hands after suffering severe burns.
At the time, no one had even asked where those injuries had come from.
That day, the entire village saw something they had failed to notice for many years. The man they had considered cursed and dangerous turned out to be the kindest person among them all.
