Chris and Collin Otkasek, a couple from California, bought a house not expecting to find anything unusual. During their usual inspection, they found a pleasant home with a comfortable dining room, an equipped kitchen, and a spacious closet.
However, the real estate agent mentioned a strange detail: a small concrete opening hidden in the backyard, a Cold War-era fallout shelter that no one knew about.
The items they found were like relics from a bygone era, including ground coffee pots and rolls of paper towels from the 1940s, all packed in vintage packaging. The room was equipped to last for several weeks, with water, food, and an air filter.
The couple researched the history of the bunker and learned that the house had once belonged to Elvin Kaufman, a nuclear engineer who worked for the U.S. government. Aware of the nuclear threat, he built the shelter in 1961 to protect his family. Although he had considered making it bigger for neighbors, the idea was rejected, and the bunker remained unused. Luckily, the couple inherited this historical refuge and its contents, a true time capsule.
They thus discovered a relic from an era when the Cold War was ever-present, but fortunately, no one ever had to use it.
