A 12-year-old girl came to apply for a job as a translator at a huge international company and claimed that she spoke several languages fluently. The most influential businessmen only laughed at her until she did something none of them had been able to do. 😲
Just a few minutes before an important meeting was due to begin, no one even looked at the thin twelve-year-old girl sitting quietly in the reception area with a worn backpack on her lap. The employees were certain that she had come to the wrong floor or had arrived with an adult. No one could have imagined that less than an hour later, this very girl would force the management of a huge international company to admit its mistake, while the CEO would publicly apologize to her.
That day, the corporation’s headquarters was holding interviews for a translator who would work during major international negotiations. The salary was extremely high, so the best specialists had gathered in the building. Some worked at embassies, others had spent years accompanying businesspeople during negotiations, and some taught foreign languages at prestigious universities. Almost every candidate was certain that they would get the position.
When another applicant walked out of the conference room with a gloomy expression, the secretary opened the door and announced loudly:
“Next.”
The girl calmly rose from her chair.
The reception area immediately fell silent.
Several people exchanged surprised glances.
“Little girl, I think you have the wrong room,” one man said with a smile.
“No, this is exactly where I need to be,” she replied calmly.
Some people laughed quietly as she confidently entered the room.
The company’s executives were seated at a long table, led by the famous businessman Alexander Reed. He was a man who was both respected and feared. Alexander rarely smiled, had no tolerance for unprofessionalism, and always made decisions very quickly.
When he saw a child standing before him, he looked up in surprise.
“I’m sorry, but this interview is for adult professionals.”
“I know,” the girl replied calmly.
“Then why are you here?”
“I came to apply for the translator position.”
Laughter spread through the room once again.
The financial director even shook his head.
“It looks like someone decided to play a joke on us today.”
Alexander studied the girl carefully.
“What is your name?”
“Emily.”
“And how old are you?”
“Twelve.”
“Do you understand that the people who come here have twenty years of professional experience?”
“I understand.”
“And you believe you can do the same work?”
“I think I can.”
The girl’s calmness surprised the people in the room.
Alexander crossed his arms.
“All right. Then tell us why we should take you seriously.”
“Because I speak eight languages fluently, and for the past two years I have been translating documents for a charity that helps foreign families.”
Quiet laughter was heard again.
“Eight languages?” one of the directors asked. “Even many of our employees don’t speak that many.”
“Would you like to test me?” Emily asked calmly.
Alexander smiled slightly.
“Of course.”
Then the girl did something that left the most experienced businesspeople frozen in shock. 😱😳 The second part of this story can be found in the first comment. 👇👇
A woman from France went first.
She asked a long question in French about international cooperation.
Emily answered immediately, as though she were speaking to an old friend.
Next, a German man spoke.
Then an Italian.
After him, a Spaniard.
Then a specialist from Japan.
Each time, the girl answered quickly, without hesitation or mistakes.
After a few minutes, no one in the conference room was laughing anymore.
Some of the executives began exchanging glances.
They realized that the person standing before them was not simply a gifted child who had memorized a few phrases, but someone who truly had an excellent command of several languages.
However, Alexander was in no hurry to change his opinion.
He picked up a thick folder from the table.
“All right. Let’s assume that you know the languages. But that isn’t enough. A translator must understand the meaning of every document. A single mistake can cause a company to lose millions of dollars.”
He placed an international contract in front of Emily.
“Try to find the problem.”
The girl opened the document and began reading it carefully.
The room became completely silent.
Almost a minute passed.
Then she looked up.
“There is a mistake here.”
Several people immediately smiled.
“What kind of mistake?” Alexander asked.
Emily turned the document toward him.
“This clause has been translated incorrectly. The English version says ‘exclusive distribution rights,’ but the translation says ‘exclusive right to sell.’ In reality, this refers not only to sales, but also to full control over the distribution of the products. If you sign the document in this form, your partner will legally be able to prevent your company from supplying the products even through its own branches.”
Complete silence fell over the table.
The company’s lawyer quickly opened the original contract.
A few seconds later, his expression changed.
He reread the paragraph and then slowly looked at the CEO.
“She’s right…”
Another lawyer checked the document independently.
“It really is a mistake.”
The chief specialist in international law let out a heavy sigh.
“We studied this contract for three days, and none of us noticed it.”
Alexander silently looked at the girl.
Then he asked:
“How did you learn such a subtle detail?”
Emily became slightly embarrassed.
“My grandfather was an international lawyer. When he became ill and could no longer work for long periods, I read documents aloud to him every evening, and he explained the meaning of every difficult expression. He used to say that a real translator must understand not only the words, but also the consequences of every sentence.”
For several seconds, no one said anything.
Then Alexander slowly rose from his chair.
The other executives looked at him in surprise.
He walked over to Emily and held out his hand.
“Please forgive us. We saw a child in front of us and decided that you could not teach us anything.”
Emily smiled and shook his hand.
Alexander turned toward his employees.
“Today, we all learned an important lesson. You should never judge a person by their age.”
After saying this, he took a new document from the folder.
“By law, we cannot hire you for this position because you are still a minor. But we can offer you something else.”
Emily looked at him questioningly.
“We will fully pay for your education at any university in the world. And when you turn eighteen, a place in our international team will be waiting just for you.”
